I repeat that dry food is the basis of nutrition. And besides him, the hamster should be given fresh vegetables and fruits daily. All vegetables are suitable except onions, garlic, sorrel, cabbage, potatoes, eggplant and pepper – they are too heavy for the hamster’s stomach and can cause flatulence. But you can safely give carrots, beets, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, pumpkin, and dry pumpkin seeds for them is a real treat. In addition, fresh parsley, dill, lettuce, dandelion leaves, clover are very useful for hamsters. You can give apples, pears, bananas, apricots, peaches, plums, raspberries, currants, pitted cherries. In general, any fruit except kiwi, persimmon and citrus fruits – they contain many acids that are poorly digested by the hamsters. They are also pleased to eat sprouted wheat, oats and hay.

I want to note that hamsters are not exclusively vegetarians. Zoologists have found that in spring and summer, in natural habitats, the diet of these rodents is 60% composed of animal food. It can be butterflies, grasshoppers, grubbers, worms. Therefore, 1-2 times a week you can pamper the hamster with animal protein. Give him non-greasy and necessarily unsalted and without spices chicken or beef meat, liver, egg white, cottage cheese, low-fat kefir or yogurt. Occasionally, you can give a piece of fat or add a few drops of vegetable oil to dry food – hamsters really like its smell. You can also give various insects that are used as food for terrarium animals – these are excellent suppliers of protein, but for the first time you do not need to buy a lot of them – some hamsters are afraid to eat them at first. And, giving such food, you need to ensure that the hamster ate it right away, and not dragged it into the pantry, where it can go bad.

Many people wonder whether or not to drink the hamster, because many experts believe that they do not need water – they get the necessary amount of moisture from vegetables and fruits. In addition, in natural conditions, hamsters almost do not drink water. There is no consensus on this. All my hamsters ate fresh food, but at the same time enjoyed drinking water. But it’s better not to put a bowl of water in the cage, as the hamster can turn it over. For these purposes, special drinkers are sold in which water is stored for several days and the hamster drinks with pleasure from it whenever he wants. But if your hamster refuses water – this is quite normal, which means that he has enough moisture received from food.

It is also necessary to hang in the cell a mineral (chalk) stone, which includes calcium and various mineral salts. It is needed to obtain the necessary minerals and grinding teeth.

Particular attention is required to pregnant and lactating females. At this time in their diet should be a lot of egg white, boiled lean meat, dairy products. Lack of protein in the female body sometimes leads to the fact that she eats her offspring.

Everyone, of course, loves their hamsters and therefore treat them with various delicacies that the animal willingly accepts. And if you occasionally give him a slice of the forbidden mandarin, a slice of kiwi or watermelon, then nothing bad will happen. But feeding the hamster sweets, chocolate, honey, muffin, salty and spicy dishes, smoked cheeses, sausages, canned goods, dried pasta, raw meat, mushrooms and full-fat milk is simply prohibited! It is sometimes better to treat your pet with dried fruits, biscuit cookies, dryers or crackers. The age of these animals is short-lived – only 2 – 2.5 years, so you need to properly maintain and feed your pet so that it maintains health as long as possible and delights you with its presence.
