- an old or inoperative hard drive from a computer;
- screwdriver in order to open the hard drive;
- can of suitable diameter (14-23 cm);
- scissors for metal or another tool that allows you to safely cut the jar;
- hot glue.
If you take a tin can of a larger diameter, then according to the same instruction you can make a wheel with your own hands and for guinea pig or chinchilla.
How to make a wheel for a hamster with your own hands
Remove the screws and remove the cover from the hard drive. Do not forget the screw that is hidden under the label.
Remove the screws that hold the mirror plates. There are other interesting details inside the disc that you can save for other projects, such as rare earth magnets.
Note that the spindle (the technical name for the motor that holds the mirror discs together and makes them spin) is now fully accessible. As you can see, this is an engine, not a bearing that you might have expected, but it works very well, no worse than a bearing, for sure.
The spindle assembly is mounted on the frame with three screws.
Preparing a can for a wheel
In order to make a wheel for a hamster with your own hands, choose a tin can of a sufficiently large size and at the same time light in weight.
Excess tin must be cut off. To draw a perfect circle, use a marker mounted on a stable surface. For one or two turns of the can you get an almost perfect circle.
Use strong scissors to cut out a can (special metal scissors will help you save time and your strength).
Be careful and use protective gloves: during cutting the can you get very sharp edges, they can injure your skin from the slightest touch. Sand the sharp edges of the can to keep your hamster safe.
This is how the resulting product looks. Avoid painted cans! Solvents can damage a hamster’s health.
Correction of unexpected problems
If the tin of the can is too thin, then the wheel will begin to bend while the hamster runs on it. To avoid unpleasant vibrations and early breakage, cut a round piece from a plastic sheet or other hard material and attach it to the bottom of the can.
Instead of a circle of plastic, you can cut two thin wooden slats and install them on the surface of the bottom of the can using hot melt adhesive. But still, the preferred option is with a plastic circle.
Mark the center of the can, mark the location of the future location of the spindle.
Fix the spindle with hot-melt adhesive in a previously marked location. Check alignment and align if necessary. To do this, take the spindle with one hand and rotate the wheel with the other. No vibration or unbalanced movement should occur.
Finishing and installing a makeshift hamster wheel
As you can see, making a wheel for a hamster with your own hands is not so difficult. But before installing the running part of the wheel, it is necessary to equip the protective coating, which will provide the hamster with comfortable conditions for jogging and keep its small tender legs intact.
As a protective coating, you can use any soft porous material. It is better to fix such a material with tape, rather than glue, so you can easily replace the coating if the hamster starts to nibble it.
Use wire or plastic ties to attach the wheel to the cage. For mounting use the spindle mounting holes or solder the metal wire along the edges of the motor.
It looks like the finished wheel for the hamster, which you made yourself. You and your pet will love it! In addition to silent operation, note that the hamster runs faster in it than in a regular wheel. This is because spindle bearings have a low coefficient of friction and high quality. The same running wheel, only of a larger diameter, will surely appeal to your guinea pig or chinchilla.
