The hamster needs a good, roomy cage. Yes, not a can or pan, but your convenient and comfortable "house", preferably a multi-story building. Shops now offer a great variety of cages for small animals, but … prices sometimes bite. Therefore, why not build a cage for your hamster with your own hands? So let’s get started.
Necessary tools and materials
For the construction of any house, including the "hamster", we need tools. Prepare: a hammer, a hand drill, a screwdriver, a stapler and a jigsaw or a handsaw. From the materials you will need: screws, nails, staples for a stapler, linoleum (30.5 x 30.5 cm), 2 pieces of MDF or plywood (but keep in mind her hamster can bite) – 80 x 60 cm. You also need 3 wooden blocks (3 x 3 cm). 2.5 m, 3 bars (3 x 1 cm) – 2 m, reinforced corners from pine 2.5 m, reinforced corners from beech (metal can be used) – 2 m, fine-mesh metal mesh – 5 m x 50 cm.
Step 1. Cooking the wooden parts
Using a file or a jigsaw, cut:
- 2 boards 54 x 30 cm,
- 4 boards 32 x 3 cm,
- 2 d boards 54 x 10 cm.
The cage frame is made of bars (3 x 3 cm). Cut them into pieces, we need:
- 4 beams of 50 cm each
- 4 beams of 47 cm each
- 2 beams of 74 cm
- 2 beams of 54 cm each.
Then cut the bars (3 x 1):
- 2 beams of 80 cm
- 2 beams of 60 cm each.
Cut reinforced corners from pine:
- 4 to 47 cm
- 2 to 80 cm
- 2 to 60 cm.
Cut reinforced beech corners:
Step 2. Master the wireframe
Now that we have already prepared all the materials, we proceed to the manufacture of the frame. On the MDF board (80 x 60 cm), fasten the bars of 50 cm. Before this drill, make holes for the screws.
On the long sides, in the same way fasten 4 beams of 47 cm each. The upper frame is made of beams of 74 cm and 54 cm.
Step 3: master the shelves
Our "Khomkin House" will be two-story, which means that the upper floor needs to be built. To do this, use our prepared bars and boards, which are fixed on the sides of the cage. Check the drawings.
Step 4. Grid
The inner part of the cage is ready, now you need to fit it around the perimeter with a steel mesh. Attach the mesh to the tree with a stapler. Make sure that the sharp edges of the net and staples do not peek inside the cage, your pet may get injured.
Step 5. Strengthen the corners
Fasten the mesh with reinforced corners as shown.
Using the remaining bars of 80 and 60 cm, place a barrier at the bottom of the cage that will hold the litter inside the cage, but you do not need garbage throughout the house?
Step 6. With a housewarming party!
Almost everything is ready, you can put a hammer out of your hands and take a deep breath. There are only small touches left – to fill the house with various accessories for the pleasure of the hamster (stairs, pipes, wheel, etc.), as well as to lay the bedding, install a drinking bowl and feeder. You can populate a new resident!
