Hamsters are usually purchased at the request of children. And after the pet arrives at a new place of residence, you can make it a cozy house with your own hands with the help of all households. It should have a nook for sleeping, a place for food and supplies. It is important not to forget about the necessary accessories for games and hygiene, about safe bedding, a toilet and many other essential details for a hamster.
What materials can make a house for a hamster
To make the fluffy pet in a home-made home comfortable and safe, it is made from environmentally friendly materials, because he is a rodent and is used to trying everything “by the tooth”. For the house choose cardboard, paper, plywood, wood or food plastic. Its dimensions depend on the size of the hamster. What can be the housing options?
You can make a house for a hamster with your own hands from almost any material
From a plastic container
For such a house, you need a food-grade plastic container of the appropriate size (as an option: 640460300), building mesh, marker, ruler, pencil, knife, lighter and plastic clamps. In the lid of the tank, you need to cut a hole-inlet using a knife heated by a lighter. It is easy to fix a grid plastic collars, having made openings for them with a hot knife. A simple hamster house is ready.
From plastic bottles
Such a house can even replace a whole cage – in this case, you need at least three five-liter bottles for water. The bottles are cut off the neck in the widest part, and a threaded ring is made from the lids. The upper parts of the containers are cut off, and 3–5 cm from the base, holes are made into which cut-off necks and rings are tightly inserted (in the form of a tunnel from one container to another). So connect the three bottles. One of them is a bedroom for a hamster, in which they place a “mink” (from the Lego constructor or other material), the second place a dining room, and the third a toilet, the fourth capacity is used as a game room, where a hamster wheel is placed. The reliability of the fastenings of the details of the house is provided with adhesive tape and superglue.
In a coconut, you need to make a hole, drain the milk, mark the entrance for the hamster. Drill a hole with a diameter of 5 cm, from the pulp, the fruit is cleaned with a chisel. To facilitate this process, you can put it overnight in the freezer. After removing the internal contents, the coconut is washed and ground with sandpaper at the edges of the entrance. The finished house is put in a cage.
From cardboard tubes
This is the easiest option for a hamster house, it is suitable for miniature rodents. 2 tubes from rolls of toilet paper or paper kitchen towels are used. One of them is flattened and semicircular segments are cut in it from two sides, the same is done with the second tube. After straightening, they are inserted one into the other crosswise. It turns out a mini-maze.

From wooden sticks
For this design you need 80-120 wooden sticks of ice cream, wood glue, a knife and a ruler. Preliminary, a drawing is made of two side walls, floor, ceiling and two roof parts. Of the sticks glued in parallel, repeat all the necessary details of the house. Glue the walls, ceiling and floor to each other. You can make joints with the same chopsticks.
The rafters of the roof of the house for the hamster (for stiffness) are made by placing the sticks first along, and then across. Until the glue dries, you can “insure” parts of the structure with rubber bands. If desired, the house can be two-story and higher. It is not difficult to attach a ladder from the same sticks to it in front.
The most popular options for making a house for rodents, we have made in separate subsections below and described in more detail.
DIY wooden house for a hamster
The most interesting and reliable design is a wooden house. You can also make a fence by placing a multi-room mansion behind it. It is easier to use plywood for these purposes, but the tree is more beautiful and lasts longer. Previously, the wood is treated with an antiseptic, then with a stain, and to facilitate the cleaning of the future premises, it is also covered with furniture varnish. The principle of creating this house for the hamster is the same as that of the birdhouse.
Wood is the best material for making a house
Necessary tools and materials
The best option for making a hamster’s house is a wooden board of 4 cm thick hardwood, and multilayer plywood is also perfect. We also need a drill, sandpaper, small cloves with a hammer or glue for wooden surfaces, a drill and a jigsaw.
- Mark the blanks. For small hamsters, the front and rear walls are 15 by 10 cm, and the side walls are 10 by 10 cm, for the top you need 17 by 12 cm, then the roof will be slightly wider than the perimeter of the house.
- Cut front windows for entry and ventilation of the home.
- To make it more convenient to fasten the parts together, to nail narrow rails in the places of their connection.
- Sand each element of the house and sand it around the edges with sandpaper.
- Knock down the walls with nails or fasten with screws. It is not necessary to fasten the roof with the frame for the convenience of cleaning.
- It is important that the tips of the nails do not stick out inside the home. Hammer them in a safe way for the hamster so that they do not injure him.
Cardboard hamster house
It’s much easier to build a cardboard house for a fluffy friend with your own hands than a wooden one. But he will also serve, given sharp teeth and the baby’s habit of constantly biting everything, will be much less. Some rigidity to such a construction will be given by pasting with tape. You can print a suitable template for a hamster’s home on a color printer and, attaching it to a sheet of cardboard, cut a blank from it. You need to bend it in certain places, glue both parts and do not forget to cut the entrance for the hamster on the front surface. But there is another option.
Necessary tools and materials
A cardboard box from paper towels of sufficient size, several cardboard tubes from toilet rolls or paper towels, scissors, PVA glue.
- Lay the box on the side plane so that the napkin hole is on the front surface.
- Fasten several rolls of toilet paper to each other crosswise, as mentioned earlier.
- Insert one of these elements into the napkin hole, and connect the others with it and with each other. The result is a house with an exit-maze.
- Secure all joints with glue. The house for the hamster is ready.
Features of buildings for the Dzungarian and Syrian breeds
The sizes of houses for the Syrian and Dzungarian hamster should be different
Each hamster house should be designed taking into account the size and habits of a furry pet. It is important that mobile and nimble Dzungarian hamsters have an opportunity for games, rodents should be comfortable and safe in the house. Dzhungar or Syrian hamsters need material for the construction of the nest, it must be soft, environmentally friendly. It can be cotton wool, napkins, but not a newspaper – a lead alloy for casting typographic fonts is dangerous for animals.
It should also be taken into account that small animals can escape from the house through the cracks that arose due to poor-quality fastening of parts during manufacture; gnaw a hole, finding its weak spot. And larger Syrian hamsters can get stuck in a too narrow opening of the tunnel, which will frighten them very much. Therefore, you need to provide all the little things and constantly check the home.
In order for the rodent to like the house, the baby grows up healthy and active in it, the housing must be filled with suitable accessories.
Educational toys for the hamster
- Running wheel. Its dimensions depend on the dimensions of the rodent: for the Dzhungarsky, this is a twenty-centimeter toy, for large specimens, including Syrian ones, up to 30 cm. The track on it should be solid, it is not permissible to use a net fraught with injuries for this. It is important to know that hamsters love to stay awake at night, so the toy should be silent.
- Tunnels. They should be spacious, with good ventilation.
- Hammocks for a hamster from tubes of different diameters or a swing in the form of four racks, a crossbeam and a pole for sitting.
- Wooden bridges or other items for developing a hamster’s teeth. It is good to use mineral stones and crayons. For these purposes, cardboard boxes, rolls of toilet paper, twigs of fruit trees are also suitable.
- Walking ball made of safe plastic in different colors with ventilation holes and recesses for the paws.
Food and Drink Accessories
It is very important to choose the right feeding trough and drinker for the rodent
To drink in the house should be a special drinker. You can do it yourself or use a bowl that should be covered so that food or parts of the litter do not get there. Small species of hamsters love to dig out pieces of food, so you can put them in the litter. Large specimens need a stable bowl for food that is difficult to turn over.
It is better to provide 2 containers – one for wet food, and the other for dry. Typically, rodents like to sit in a manger, so it should be quite spacious. It is also important that there is a separate “pantry” for stocks that the hamster will definitely make. It can be a capacity in a secluded corner of the house. The hamster himself will "tell" where he has a secret, you just need to carefully observe him, and then substitute a bowl there.
Litter for a hamster
Litter is very important for maintaining cleanliness in the house and creating comfort and coziness. It can be pressed sawdust, but not too small so as not to clog the baby in the nose or get confused in its fur.
If wood pellets are used, they should be odorless and quickly turn into dust. Sawdust of coniferous trees can cause an allergy in the animal, and tissue and cotton wool are dangerous because they can break into fibers, in which the hamster gets tangled.
The best materials for laying hamster in the house are pieces of corn cobs with grains, which can also be buried. Suitable for this are paper towels or odorless white toilet paper.
The floor layer should be at least 6 cm deep, because hamsters love to play and dig into it. When cooling, its thickness increases. It needs to be cleaned daily and changed once a week. A few granules from the previous litter should be added to the fresh filler so that the familiar smell remains, otherwise the animal will be nervous.
Hamsters are cleanliness, so for the toilet they need a separate place in the house. It will have to be cleaned daily, removing waste and adding clean litter. A cardboard tray is well suited for this purpose, this material is replaced quite often, because it absorbs urine well, partially absorbing its smell.
The toilet is often filled with special clean sand, in which the animal likes to rummage around. But sand does not hold smells well, so it needs to be changed often. Cat litter or mineral granules are not suitable for this – they can provoke poisoning or allergies in a furry friend.
This is an important element in equipping a hamster house that does not like water procedures. They are successfully replaced by swimming in special sand for chinchillas. To clean the wool from grease and dirt, a high capacity with a ladder is placed in the house. Suppose the option with a hole cut into the side. From above, it is closed with a lid that prevents the contents from spilling out. The volume of the bath should be twice the size of a fluffy pet, and its sides should be quite high.
Housewarming: introduce a pet to a new home
A hamster, like any other pet, needs time to adapt to a new house and owner
The newly acquired hamster, being in a state of stress, is scared of everything. To gradually get used to the new house, he will need at least a week. During the development, it is better not to disturb the baby. When mastering, he begins to actively mark his territory, so at first the litter should not be changed.
Hamsters are curious by nature, so sooner or later, if the baby does not feel the danger, he will show interest in studying the house and be sure to examine it.
It is important to immediately teach young animals to use the toilet. They themselves will designate a convenient place for him. By carefully observing the behavior of a settled newcomer, you can correct errors in the equipment of his house by making some changes or improvements to his taste.
For example, when the game wheel is poorly fortified and makes sharp sounds when moving, the hamster is frightened and does not play in it. After strengthening, lubricating the axis of rotation or replacing it with a less noisy option, a furry friend will be happy to run and somersault.
Before you get a hamster, you need to familiarize yourself with his habits, using information materials. After all, this is not a living toy, but a creature with its own character, requiring care and attention. You should think about a house for a potential friend, about all the details of equipping this home. The best options are to make it and some necessary accessories with your own hands from natural and safe materials. This will unite the family and allow everyone to participate in the preparations for the arrival of its new member, help children (ordinary instigators of the acquisition of a hamster) feel responsibility for the fate of a little friend.
